Are you wondering about the best ways to whiten your teeth? A brighter smile can bring you confidence and create an excellent first impression. So what is it important to know about teeth whitening? The expert team at Whitehall House Dental Practice explains.
What is teeth whitening?
Tooth Whitening is a procedure that can only legally be carried out by a dentist. Tooth whitening kits bought on the internet or over the counter can only legally contain 0.1 per cent hydrogen peroxide. This concentration will not have any noticeable effect on the colour of teeth.
We offer PolaDay and PolaNight treatments from SDI, advanced teeth whitening systems that will have solutions for all patients. These systems are backed by years of research and include in-practice or take-home day or night whitening options, all in accordance with EU regulations.
Are there laws around teeth whitening?
On 31 October 2012, the EU Council Directive 2011/84/EU (amending EU Council Directive 76/768/EEC) came into force in the UK. It sets out who can use what strength of product when carrying out tooth whitening. In the UK, regulations say that products containing or releasing up to 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide can be used as long as:
- Products of this strength are sold only to dental practitioners.
- A dentist has first examined the patient to ensure there are no risks or other concerns about their oral condition.
- The patient is over 18 years old.
- For each cycle of use, the first use is by a dental practitioner or under their direct supervision by a dental hygienist or dental therapist.
Why do teeth discolour?
Everybody’s teeth are different and can discolour over time for various reasons. Typically staining can be caused by eating and drinking tea, red wine, spicy foods or smoking.
How does tooth whitening work?
Teeth whitening is a safe treatment. Oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are used to lighten the shade of the teeth. When the product is applied to the teeth, it breaks down into water and oxygen ions. These work on the stain molecules, so they become short and colourless. These stains are then removed from the tooth by saliva.
How do our treatments vary?
In-house we use PolaOffice+, which contains 60 per cent hydrogen peroxide. This treatment has a high pH, so it works quickly in around 45 minutes. PolaDay contains the same amount of hydrogen peroxide but has a neutral pH. PolaNight contains between 10 and 16 per cent carbamide peroxide, which is equivalent to 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Our dentists can explain the different treatments to you and discuss the best options for your needs, including the costs. Treatments start from £375.
How can I keep my teeth white?
There are many ways to keep your teeth looking white, including taking care of your oral hygiene with daily cleaning. Pay attention to foods and drinks that could stain your teeth, and brush your teeth afterwards. It is important to drink lots of water to get rid of any staining agents in your mouth.
